Affiliate Marketers Still Have Not Embraced Video

by Shawn Collins on February 21, 2012

Affiliates were asked “Are you currently integrating video in your affiliate marketing plan?” for the 2011 Affiliate Summit AffStat Report.

A large majority of respondents, at 70%, said no, and the remaining 30% are currently dabbling in video for their affiliate marketing efforts.

I started playing around with video as an affiliate several years ago, and that was partly because there were not many affiliates doing it.

My Affiliate Summit partner, Missy Ward, and I ran a successful affiliate site for years called WeViews. We recently closed it down, due to time constraints.

We reviewed all sorts of gadgets and random items starting in 2007.

The video with the most views during that time was apparently popular because I had crazy eyes (I was trying not to blink for the whole thing).

What’s holding you back from trying video, whether you’re an affiliate or merchant?

Over fourteen-hundred affiliates were surveyed on their methods, preferences, and strategies for the 2011 Affiliate Summit AffStat Report.

I guess we are in the minority, trying to incorporate our own or good quality videos available from developers into almost every article we publish. There simply is no substitute. For many posts a bunch of static photos just doesn’t cut it for us. It is time consuming but I think our readers appreciate our efforts.

Do you think this is lack of experience (with equipment, editing, etc.), lack of time, or people are just afraid to put themselves in front of the camera?

I think people are probably intimidated by the prospect of going in front of the camera and the editing process.

Most any point and click camera and a cheap tri-pod would suffice to get started.

I suppose that’s understandable. I’d like to incorporate more video into my program at work, and also integrate much more video into my personal blog. It just seems more engaging, and a deeper level of connecting between the blog author and their audience.

    Great topic!

A big reason to get video going is to have more penetration in the search results, too – indexing in Google and YouTube!
